ABOUT
Rachel Achtemeier Rhodes has served as the Senior Pastor and Head of Staff at Morrisville Presbyterian Church in Morrisville, PA, since March of 2017. Prior to her time at MPC, Rachel served for six years as the Associate Pastor at the First Presbyterian Church of Haddonfield in Haddonfield, NJ.

Rachel earned her Master of Divinity (M.Div) degree from Princeton Theological Seminary in Princeton, NJ, and did her undergraduate work at Hope College in Holland, MI. Rachel is currently pursuing a Doctor of Ministry (D.Min) degree at Duke Divinity School in Durham, NC, and expects to graduate from that program in the Spring of 2026. Rachel is a native of North Carolina, though spent most of her formative years in Dubuque, Iowa. Rachel is married to Matt, who grew up in Little Rock, AR, and is also a Presbyterian minister. The two met during their time at Princeton Theological Seminary. Matt currently serves as an ACPE Certified Educator, and as a Senior Chaplain Educator, roles that he will continue to serve in on a remote basis. Rachel and Matt have two children, MJ
and Ben, and a faithful dog, Penny.

In her free time, Rachel enjoys anything that brings her joy! This could be as simple as a cup of coffee on the porch or as big as a travel adventure somewhere altogether new! Rachel loves photography, music, a good book at the beach, staying active (especially outside!), trying new restaurants, a good glass of wine, and enjoying as much time as possible with dear friends and family.

ABOUT
A native of Augusta, Laurie graduated from Agnes Scott College (about a mile from the Presbyterian Seminary in Decatur, GA) and the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary (in Columbia, SC) and was ordained by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.  She served congregations in Thunderbolt and Savannah, GA; Roseville, MN; Reading and Gouglersville, PA; Dothan, AL; St. Simons Island (interim at Lord of Life Lutheran); and Brunswick (St. James Lutheran, until her retirement in 2017).  She also served one-year chaplaincies at Egleston Children’s Hospital in Atlanta and at Hospice Savannah.

Laurie is the proud mother of Sarah (in FL) and Christopher (in WI), and grandmother to four very special grandchildren – Nash, Grayson, River, and Lilly.  Her ministry and life experience have given her a heart for people in transition and grief.  She believes that God’s best work shows through when we are absolutely not in control (though we’d like to be!).  “God loves to surprise us with options we can’t see.  Some of my best thinking and praying happens when I’m not trying to figure it out … when I’m walking on the beach … or reading … or singing … or enjoying lunch with a friend.  The answers we seek can’t be hurried.  They come in their own time.”

Life can often feel like walking out deep into a churning sea. When disappointments come knocking us down like a crashing wave, we may find ourselves yelling "God - where are you?!?" Today, whatever you facing, wherever you may find yourself, our WayMaker is calling you and me to deeper intimacy with Him. Though the waves may be crashing in, we can trust the WayMaker is making a way through.

Join Ann Voskamp as she teaches S.A.C.R.E.D.—a daily habit, a rule of life, a way of life—that will reorient your soul in relation to God through Scripture and prayer and study. The S.A.C.R.E.D. is a compass to find your way and The Way—to know God.

Kingsley Plantation
Try Something New

"If you have an image of slavery, there’s a good chance it’s either “Gone With the Wind” or “Twelve Years a Slave.” But there is a Florida story of slavery that is neither of these. In fact, it’s a story that could take place only in Florida, with its heritage as a Spanish colony.

It all happened at Kingsley Plantation, a historic site under the National Park system, in an unspoiled coastal stretch of Florida east of Jacksonville.

Kingsley Plantation is a little known park in an out-of-the-way location. It is physically beautiful and emotionally evocative; in short, well worth a detour to visit. It’s part of the Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve, which probably wins the prize as Florida’s most obscure national park."

-Bonnie Gross in Florida Rambler

Join our Try Something New group for a fun trip to this historic site just outside of Jacksonville on Saturday, May 4. We will meet at the church at 9AM and head to Kingsley Plantation for a morning tour and then have lunch together at Singleton's. Don't miss out on the fun!

The refuge encompasses six man-made freshwater ponds, as well as extensive salt marsh, open fields, forested wetlands, and mixed hardwood/pine forest.  This diversity of habitat makes the refuge an important resource for migratory birds (342 species of birds have been seen on the refuge and 83 species breed here).

Habitat for Humanity of Glynn County
St. Simons Presbyterian supports the work of Habitat for Humanity of Glynn County both financially as well as through volunteer support. All proceeds from the Habitat for Humanity Restore funds construction for new homes in Glynn County. Church members and visitors support Habitat in a number of ways. For example, church members volunteer at the Restore on a weekly basis helping to organize donations and merchandise. New volunteers are always welcome! St. Simons Presbyterian Church also sponsored the construction of a home for Quincy and Terrance Armstrong (Home #78), which was built after losing their previous home to a fire. In the spring college groups visit Glynn County to volunteer for Habitat. Our church typically hosts a dinner for one of these groups, so even if you don't like building, you can still do something to help others provide suitable housing. If you are interested in volunteering for Habitat for Humanity through St. Simons Presbyterian Church, please check the calendar or the events page for details and registration forms.
A Season of Transition at St. Simons Presbyterian Church

On January 30, 2022, Rev. Alan Dyer announced that he felt God's call to serve a new congregation. During this season of leadership transition, the session (i.e., the governing body of the church) recognizes how important it is to keep our congregation and community up-to-date with the developments taking place. Below, you will find a list of communications sent out to the congregation during this process to-date. Please feel free to call the church office with any questions you may have. We are all here for each other!
